Open Question: How easy is it to replace an older version of Linux Ubuntu with a new one?
I have Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop, but it won't boot at all. i have downloaded and mounted a disk for 9.04 and i'm guessing that when instaling and i get to the partition section, i'll just give the old version 0% and it will get rid of it? Am i right in thinking that, or is there something else that i wil need to do?

I love my car and I thought I was looking after it until I could not start it one day it had to be towed to a european car specialist to see what was wrong with it, this is the list of things that came back wrong with my car: 1. Transmission faulty flares between 2nd and 3rd thumps into 3rd gear, 2. Rear transmission mounts broken, 3. Trottle unit faulty, 4. Cam angle sensor 1/3 cylinders faulty, 5. Rattle in the front end, 6. Front control arm bushes split and possible ball joint, 7. Vehicle has been fitted with ibach lowered springs and does not ride nice, 8. Both outer cv boots split because vehicle is too low, 9. General oil leaks from motor including rocker cover and cam seals and tensioners, 10. Powersteering hoses leaking, all of this because there are mechanics out there are using generic scanners instead of the correct scanners giving me and others back false readings on their vehicles, what could you do at this stage the mechanic told me to get rid of it but body wise it is in good condition, he noted that all of these repairs would cost thousands of dollars, it is due for rego in around 6 weeks the car is going but I do not know what to do with it, should I save and get it fixed or do I just let it sit in the backyard until I have paid off the last 9 payments and have it towed to the wreckers to be detroyed, any input re this matter would be very appreciated for I know there are people out there that have similar cars to mine, what would you do? Open Question: Why is my ASUS computer LED light flashing red when i turn it on, and taking 10 minutes to boot up?
When I turn it on, the LED light on the computer flashes red for about 5 minutes and the screen is blank and then it goes to the log on screen and i log on and then it takes about 8 minutes to fully load everything. It is overall much slower than normal, and the light continues to flash red... i don't know what is wrong with it, can anybody help? I'm not very computer intelligent , sorry !

this was my previous question :- Hi i am facing this problem since i have bought my new PC I was using Ubuntu 8.04 on it and it was working fine my mobo is a DG43NB with C2Q 6600 on it HDD - ST3500320AS (all ntfs partitions) i was getting some PS/2 mouse problems and Intel send me a mail that i should upgrade the BIOS but after upgrading the bios i am not able to boot into any OS that uses GRUB. Windows are working fine but windows vista with the OEM bios activator doesn't work(same cursor problem) one thing common in all of this is GRUB please help me. As i am very fond of UBUNTU and i am not able to use it. After the BIOS"beep" HDD lights go dead and the blinking cursor just remains * 3 weeks ago * (Tiebreaker) Additional Details I have reinstalled Ubuntu several times. 3 weeks ago i have reinstalled grub several times after this but still my HDD is dead after the Post beep but windows work fine on this hardware. does any body now or has faced about this problem

I've been getting really bad omens that my hard drive will die very soon. The SMART diagnosis says i have a BIOHD-8 error with my hard drive. The computer freezes several times when doing simple things like opening folders, clicking on a link, etc. I got the bluescreen of death for a physical memory dump. When I restarted my computer, the fans were running and the processor was working, but the light wasn't on and there was no display. Fortunately I have Symantec Ghost and just in case I moved my files onto a 250 GB external hard drive. I'm about to buy a new hard drive which I will swap my current hard drive out for. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284 My question is, do I have to partition the new hard drive first or do I just boot from the CD with the backup image on it? Well I have k2 sonic size Medium bindings and k2 Domain size 8 boots that I outgrew and I would like to sell them so I can get new boots and bindings. They were both only used for 1 season never abused and pretty much new. I got them for X-mas and am not sure how much my parents paid. I would like a combined price so I can put them on craigslist.
Resolved Question: my computer is broken what do I do?
I turn it on and it boots up normally, but after I log on it runs slowly and then it either stops working - nothing is on the screen, the screen power button goes to the color when the tower is off but it is still on. screen resolution and color get really bad as in 8 bit color and something like 300 x 400 resolution or a blue screen appears saying that I need to restart the computer, windows was shut down to protect it, there was an infinite loop, and something is wrong with the file nv4_...(don't remember the rest) I'm fairly sure it's not a virus

i've tried F-8 F-4 and shift; and they will take me to the screen of the boot options like safe mode and all but there the keyboard won't work; the light above num. lock is lit up but nothing on the keyboard works at all; but it will work if i press F-2 which takes me to the set up and the keyboard works there i've tried the same thing with another keyboard and the same thing happens how can i fix this? (the keyboard not working on boot up options screen) the computer is a Windows XP professional Dell and i can't get into normal mode cause i've forgotten my password for my account! i haven't been on that computer in like 4 months i've been able to get into safe mode a while ago i know that. but not now

Hi Friends I was just wondering that can my modem be rebooted automatically at a scheduled time. I am having Huawei WA1003A modem. According to my internet plans my isp provides me limited bandwidth during day time.But at night from 2:00-8:00.i can download unlimited. But there is one condition: i have to reboot or restart my modem after 2:00 to activate the free download mode. i can reboot the modem manually as follows. 1)first open internet explorer 2)type 192.xxx.x.x in URL(where xxx.x.x is some number) 3)it asks me a user name and password now. 4)After entering user name and password i have to go to Tools-->system commands--->Restart.. by doing this my modem gets restarted. Is there any way i can restart it without my physical presence. Any program or trick that can do this task. Thanx

im starting football in a month. im 6"2 and like 315 pounds. i am fat but have muscle to boot. my coach wantes me to play football as a linemen and sence i am at a small school i thought id say yes and see if i could help them out. the only thing is 2 a days start i august and right now i cant run more than a quarter mile without like passing out. and when football starts there going to be expecting me to run miles at a time hell the warmups are (8) 40yard sprints. im trying to eat healthyer but i want to know some workouts that will help me get ready for football. and running wouldnt help much becuase id problebly hurt myself. any advice would be helpful i dont want to be embarised out there thx

When I first downloaded Google Chrome I was amazed by its speed and boot time. Now I am amazed only by its boot time. I have a very hard time to get a page to load. Its not my Wi-Fi because I can get sites to load perfectly in IE 8, Firefox 3, and Safari 4. Whenever I type a site in I get this: This webpage is not available. When I have the the car in gear and I am accelerating it will sometimes shake it does not do it all the time some days it wont do it at all others its unbearable seems to be worse when turning or going uphill the vibration is mostly concentrated on front passenger tire i checked the cv joint and the boot is not cracked what i believe is the transmission is covered in old grease and the "rod" possibly the axle coming from the cv join is rusted and moves east to west about 1/8 an inch each way just looking for any insight to the problem

I am normally a size 8.5 in woman's shoes. I needed new boots and my coach said to get a size lower then what I am. So I ordered a 7.5 and also an 8 just to see. The 7.5 hurt real bad and was too tight! The 8 fit just like I would buy a sneaker. I have to wear panty hose though or very thin socks. I don't know if this is good that I got a size as if I were buying a sneaker or if I should have gotten the 7.5 because your feet will expand or something? In the size 8 skate my big toe just barley not even touches the front of the boot. In the 7.5 my big toe was rubbing against the front of the boot. Will heating it help make the boot fit me better? What should I do? My mom thinks I am still growing and my dad thinks I got the wrong skate size because he thinks my toe should be squished in the skate. Who is right? Voting Question: how to boot computer in safe mode?
I have a problem with my computer that started few months ago, the system restore does not work in normal mode I had to use it in safe mode, now I cannot get the computer to boot in safe mode, I press f8 as and I pick safe mode as usual, the computer starts going to safe mode but stops, the hard drive led keeps blinking but the screen does not move, I waited 8 minutes and I gave up, and I had to unplug from the power source to shut off. Should I wait any longer than 8 minutes since the hard drive keeps spinning? Any help will really appreciated.

She is 12, 5'1", 85 pounds, and has women's size 8 feet. She is pretty good for a 2 year boarder, for she can do circles, squares, and some not-too-hard diamonds. She likes staying on trails, but plans on doing a bit of terrain park work this year. She is a modest boarder, and probably isn't gonna wreck her board. I was wondering... What size of a board could be good? We were thinking 136 cm, but there is a really cool board she wants thats 138 cm. WIll it be ok? Assuming she's going to grow more but her feet probably won't, how long might this board last her? Pricing isn't really an issue (but we're not interested in spending thousands and thousands of dollars, mind you) and we have some good websites, but what kind of brand names are trusted? Burton? DC? been experimenting with linux distros for the past couple of years on and off and the last ubuntu i had was 8.10 and my intel 82845g chipset worked perfectly with it, however, the update manager and some other things were real buggy. i install dual booted my xp with 9.04 the other day and despite the countless hours of searching on the internet and trying everything, i can't get desktop effects of compiz to work because of the driver issue (believe me i tried every suggestion i was able to find) i'm probably gonna go back to 8.10 but- what exactly is the difference between them?

First off: 1.I live in my uncle's, Ken, house. 2.He is a truck driver meaning he is only home for about 5 days each month. 3.My grandma, who I live with in his house, has legal guardianship over me. He has: threaten to kick me out (at 15.) been threating to send me to boot camp since I was 8. (can he even do that since he isn't my legal guardian) threaten to send pictures of my "dirty" room all over school (what teen doesn't have a dirty room at some pt. and time) Well my uncle, Ken, just go married to Kat. Well she isn't from the States. Well he drives truck & every time he comes home I get yelled at for something and its usually the stupidest things. Well now that Kat is staying at home (she's like 4 months pregnant) she calls my uncle EVERY NIGHT and tells him the things I do or do not do. (ex. putting dishes in the sink, instead of the dishwasher) then he calls my grandma and yells at her for these things. Which I don't think is fair. I mean that's his mom. So I got off because I didn't want my boyfriend to hear all of this (btw- I bought my phone & pay 1/2 the phone bill. Also its in my DAD"S account) So he yelled at me for a while. Then later I got on the computer. Well I always keep my door shut because I don't like one of our cats to come into my room. Before I know it He slams open the door and yells at me to come into the living room and fix the tv. I NEVER watch tv in there. I have my own tv. Well I told him it was his tv and he could fix it himself. Well that p*ssed him off & he came into my room, told me I was a selfish brat and pulled me out of my chair, into the hallway. Now remember his pregnant wife? She had to pry him off of me. i was on the ground in a fetal poistion with him on top of me. Then we were standing and (I'm like 3" taller than him) I was standing over him with my hands in fist. Every time he comes home he makes me cry. Once my boyfriend brought me home and he was helping me bring something into my room and I introduced them. He pretty much just ignored him (which I thought was rude). What could/should I do? What do you think of this situation? He cannot kick me out. How many times do I have to say that?

Hi. so i just spent a whole week with my cousin who is in the marines where we basically talked about marines in general and i became interested. I never told him that i am some what interested in joining now just because my fam bam would flip and i want to make sure its what i want. but any way to the questions im a junior in high school if that makes any difference 1.What is the difference between enlisted and Reserves. if i joined the reserves does that still mean i work on base part or full time. or im only there when they need me. 2. Can enlisted still get civilian education and jobs? 3. What would make someone ineligible to join? I personally have asthma. Its not as bad when i was in my younger years 4-8 its calmed down drastically but it often leaves me short of breath in PE or ill have occasional flare ups. and i ware glasses i dont know if that matters (i know what a dork xD) 4.Do i get to choose where im stationed? im on the west coast and want to go to the San Diego base if i ever do join. 5.How bad is boot camp. thats what freaks me out the most because life after that seems easier although i am probably wrong =P and again i dont know if it matters but the reason why i want to join the marines: While we take the aptitude tests in school or i do personal research to decide what i want to study in college and go into a career of i look at what would supposedly be "good" for me and a lot of the other ones and i have no drive for them no interest in anything the have suggested, but when i went to go hang out with my cousin the marines got my attention i was actually interested in it and kind of want to join. Is the automatic DQ for asthma apply to all military or just marines? Oh and what i forgot to add is my asthma is more seasonal in the summer when its warmer and dry its gone but when its winter-spring i see it although i havnt used my inhaler for awhile because if it goes away in a little while if i slow my pace.

I just got booted off yahoo and lost all my level 4 Q and A history and contacts...very sad, lot's of good stuff there. They don't give you much warning....my fault tho, I was getting a little vulgar....ps don't test them. Anyone else suffer a similar or worse fate than this?..level 8, level 12?
